Abortion - Gonna Be Worse
Over here I don't think these dudes are trying to play at an ultra fast speed, beating the living shit out of their instruments or creating a hell lot of noise; instead, they've been trying to inject a healthy dose of groove and catchiness into their music, and at the same time making sure they don't compromise on their grinding brutality. It's well balanced in that sense, heavy but not something as heavy that would need you to charge yourself up probably by dropping on the floor and doing rapid push-ups before you press play. It's something that you'll be most likely in the mood for almost any time. The songs range mostly from fast (but not insanely fast) to mid paced and slow down only in the song "Money Is Your God". The vocals are pretty good, mostly alternated between deep gruff constipated growls and excited, enthusiastic squawks that sound as if coming from a duck made to swim on a pool of acid. There's some neat shouting to be heard as well. The drummer does well to keep up with the music and adjusts himself to match the pace and tempo changes. The lyrics seem political but with a sense of humour, so that's cool. The album starts off well, plummets in the middle but again picks up with a couple of killer songs at the end that are the without a doubt the album's best -"Heavy Mental" and "N.W.O.". Man, I can't stress enough on how much they kick my hairy, nonexistent ass. If all the songs on the album were like them then this would've been a masterpiece, but alas, it's hampered by quite some standard/filler songs. The good feeling towards the end (thanks mostly to those two songs) is almost ruined by the last song which is just noise, a real bad idea to end the album if you ask me. It's almost like the satisfaction of a good heavy meal ruined by a deep uncontrollable burp that brings some vomit to your mouth. But you can avoid that by using the ultimate saviour - the mighty stop button. Well, overall, Abortion are at their best when they're playing those catchy, goofy songs and they should really play more of those, especially since their music isn't very original. Gonna Be Worse is certainly the band's best effort till date. It's helluva fun and is bound to find its way in your player very often. March 7th, 2005 |
