Anal Blast - Spraying Blood Live DVD

Josh Krech - Guitar
Pete Chavez - Drums
While job-huntin'/record-shoppin' with Smith out of The Afternoon Gentlemen,
Executive Distraction Tasks, Kastrated, LBW, Reth, Grotpeddler etc, this
caught my eye in the lokill Hellraiser outlet. Havin' been an unabashedly
avid fan of the works of cuddly degenerate Don Decker and his associates
since the classick Vaginal Vempire, as well as his vox bein' one of the
biggest influences upon the pitches, textures and patterns of the funny
sounds that come out of my own face, I couldn't wander out of the shop
without this new DVD in my pocket.
Mr. Decker is currently sufferin' from, as far as I know, terminal liver
problems so, to your reviewer at least, this package serves as a reminder
that, should his condition ever deteriorate to the point of clog poppery,
the Death/Grind underground'll lose one of it's most entertainin' larger
than life characters. For any readers unfamiliar with Anal Blast, which is
unlikely, cos they probably wouldn't be readin' this review otherwise, they're
a deliberately offensive, overtly perverted Death/Grind cartoon, combinin'
the rippin' speed, filthy grooves and clattery blasts of Goregrind with the
hefty riffs and vox styles of Brootal Death, with a smatterin' of shreddy
Black Metal-style bits. Their key themes are menstruation and misogyny,
delivered thru the extremely dynamic vox of a lovable, tampon-guzzlin'
frontman, who's like a kind of cross between El Duce, GG Allin and Sam
Kinison, with steamin' heaps of charisma, an amiable side and a genuine love
for all Extreme Metal music. This is evident from his extra-curricular
activity, namely Nightfall Records label and promotions, which is home to
Cthonic, Sarcophagus, Forest of Impaled, Cromlech et al, a service also
responsible for organizing countless Death, Grind and Black gigs over the
years. The earlier lineups of Anal Blast featured a rhythm section of Joey
Jordison and Paul Grey, who would of course later join/overcrowd the ranks
of the pseudo-brutal Mallcore masquerade, Slipknot. With a line-up that's
been all over the gaff since their inception, havin' rattled its way through
about four guitarists and more than a dozen drummers, the band've managed to
menstruate a smelly batch o' solid releases. There's raucous Puss Blood
Pentagram demo, many tunes from which would eventually appear on the
aforementioned Vaginal Vempire; a menstrual Death/Grind cornerstone heaped
with instant classicks; Version 5.0bese, which appeared on a split with
Cephalic Carnage, displayin' a tidier, more technical style, followed by an
extreme return to form on the horrid, messy, rough, bass-free, no-messin' Battered Bleedin' Bitch album, plus a very nice best-of, which proffered a
whole host of classicks from all the releases. Right, enough, this is turnin'
into more of a fuckin' biography than a review...
*Spoiler start*
The film features a selection of gig footage from between 1995 and 2006,
takin' us round venues in Minnesota, Illinois and New Jersey as well as the
Millwaukee Metal Fest, givin' us a full-frontal insight into their bawdy
antics both on and off stage. Your shite-faced reviewer recommends that, to
get the most out of their DVD, it's best if you share the band's sense of
humour, have a strong stomach and harbour a genuine lust for their menstrual
material, but if you're without one or all of those, you should watch it
anyway just to find out what Anal Blast is all about.
Their sordid capers are shoved right into your face as soon as you press
play, with a close-up of Decker usin' his microphone as a means of
penetrating one of his incredibly unshy Anal Blast bitches, which causes
much crowd-merriment and screechin' vaginal feedback. Footage from a show in
St. Paul, Minnesota follows, where the band race thru several numbers, first
a song about a lady with an extremely flocculent clopper called "Hairy
Hatchet Wound" (which I don't recognize from any of their releases, so that's
a nice bonus), along with with a classick twat hat-trick from Vempire,
namely "Wings Flew Away" (drum solo sounds a bit poor, though), "Menstrual
Pancake" and "Puss Blood Popsicle", with Decker regorgin' some repulsive vox
and daft banter into the mic, his band windmillin' with sweaty abandon. For
softcore Grindcore pornography in this section, you can to see the act of
pudendal microphone infiltration from the intro in its entirety, then two
more of Decker's highly alacritous, hardly clad ladyfriends wrigglin' about
backstage while the band scrawl slogans and affix stickers upon their
fake-blood splattered bodies, followed by footage of probably the same two
harlots writhin' about onstage durin' some other band's set. Next, durin' a
performance of "Pull a Train" at an un-named gig, Decker has a few tampons
lobbed at him but, havin' sniffed and tasted 'em, mocks the thrower for just
daubin' em with Kool-Aid, then chucks 'em back again!
An excremental treat follows, in a scene filmed from within the tour-van,
parked up whilst Decker happily defaecates at the road-side, then badgers
one of his gippin', gaggin' associates to step out and film the enormous
stream of shite! Key quotes: "Is it solid at least?" Decker: "Some of it is,
but not most!" He isn't lying!
After that, you can see old footage of New Jersey gig, with ear-splittin'
performances of "Diaretic Orgasm", my vokill warm-up favourite, "Bloody Mary"and another run through the "Wings/Pancake/Popsicle" medley, as well as rare
track "She Eats Her Tampons out of My Shit" (think that was originally
recorded specially for a Death/Grind comp, and appeared later on the
double-disc edition of Vempire), which is a nice addition. Durin' the
latter, Decker invites a female associate onstage to urinate on his head,
but unfortunately becomes 'piss-shy' and can't deliver the golden goods.
At an un-named venue during 'Your Mother Sucks Cock in Hell', there's
further onstage vulgarity, with Decker inviting a lady colleague onstage,
but unfortunately the twatulated mic insertion is unsuccessful this time around, although Decker has a good try all the same. There's a few tunes
from an Illinois show next, with "Bloody Brown Mouse", "Spraying Blood" and
those three tracks from Vaginal Vempire (again!). Then, there's a fun scene
with Decker bein' the old romantic yet again, charmin' the ladies outside
the venue with some lingerie-headwear antics.
'Go Fuck Yourself' sees rousin' renditions of "High on Cunt Blood" and
"Smell Your Cunt", accompanied by more of the band's uninhibited womenfolk
exposin' themselves, followed by yet another slog thru the "Wings" triplet,
whilst a show in Charlotte has a fun cover of "Pussy Whipped" by S.O.D.! I'm
sure most Anal Blast fans will have often seen Decker displaying his
cavernous anus in photographic format, either on MySpace or in their inlays,
so we can at last breathe a sigh of relief when we see it as a moving image
durin' this chapter. There's also a glimpse at his sweeter side when we see
him havin' a jolly dance backstage with a lady, to the sound of "Dancing
Queen"! Also, whenever "Honey/Bloody Hole/Suck Your Shit Off My Dick" is
place, Don actually acts the sweetheart, invitin' a lady onstage with him,
not to shove a mic into her 'slop-hole', but just to serenade her like a
true gent. A bit after that, there's one of my favourite backstage moments,
as Decker creeps up on a sleepin' friend then disenrobes his enormous
stomach right into his face! Hahahaha!
The California and Millwaukee shows that follows has greater set variety
with tracks from each album, so you get stuff like the same three songs pop
up again! By this point, you know exactly what you're going to get at an
Anal Blast show: splattery Grind, repulsive but hilarious stage banter,
hectic pit-antics and lots of Decker's uninhibited bitches thrustin' and
gyratin' about the place.
The sound quality for most of the gig footage is fair to poor, with the
drums usually soundin' a bit flaccid, the guitars just a waspy-fuzz heap,
bass like a boomy rumble-cloud with the vox splattered everywhere, often
full o' feedback too, which is further exacerbated by Decker's mic to
monitor antics. It can be a bit of an ear bashin' at first, but once you get
over that, this kind of sound can lend itself well to their filthy songs.
The picture is adequate and often not too good, but you can't be expectin'
crystal clear quality of sky-high resolution when much of the stuff is shot
on wobbly hand-held camera, although this does add to the dirty, hectic, DIY
feel of the film. The packagin' is a simple but effective affair, with a
nice renderin' of Decker on the front cover doin' what he does best, then
there's a two-page collage of debauched pics on the inside, one of which see
the man himself in a state of total undress! Aaaargh! There's also some very
recent pictures of the band, with a hairless Decker sportin' his new head
tattoo.
*Spoiler end*
Overall, an entertainin' release, the only real negative point bein' the
repetition of the same three Vempire tunes in the live footage, but I
think I can let them off with that, for the time being anyway. Don't get me
wrong, of course I enjoy those classick maxi-pad tracks, but I think a
little less of them here would've worked a treat. If you're an Anal Blastaficionado, you should have this already. If you're not, then acquire their
entire discography, along with this DVD.
