Formed by the guitarist of the tragically overlooked band Hazael, which played competent old school death metal in the progressive vein of Edge of Sanity with heavy Clandestine era Entombed influences on their debut album Thor, Blind Beyond's music is indeed rooted in the old school style but has enough modern elements in it to appeal to today's death metal public and also not sound like a pale imitation of the glorious early ‘90s era.
Their take on old school death metal is comparable to the style of their underrated Polish counterparts Mutilation that employed a massive soul-crushing sound to play Grave tunes with a level of slickness only Polish bands seem capable of achieving. “Inhuman” is strongly reminiscent of that in which Blind Beyond use their inexplicable heaviness to play chuggy head-throbbing music while often proudly showcasing their Morbid Angel influences before invariably altering the tempo of the music with charging vitriolic thrash parts. Of a perceptibly different nature, “Blessed Are The Stupid” is where early Damnation influences come to the fore. It is a skillfully executed track with unrelenting flesh-tearing hooks and mandatory head-nodding parts. Giving your body a much needed break lest it shakes off its limbs to the frantic music, the song features dark dirge-laden Incantation tunes, bringing to mind another slick and underrated Polish band Excommunion in the given context. Reminiscent of early Vader, “Red At Sky” is a heavy monster of a track which expertly traverses both heavy and thrashy territories, and also uses epic drum buildups to create momentum and scope for excitement. “Abattoir of Worms” uses the same alternating formula to a great effect and here probably for the first time it uses solos to reach a crescendo after which a paralysing breakdown is unleashed upon its aroused listeners in the form of a breathtaking Osculum Obscenum Hypocrisy segment.
The music on Out of Faith is not something which we haven't heard before, but it is a solid fucking debut EP that any true death metal fan should appreciate. Blind Beyond are definitely a band to watch out for; their full length album could well be devastating.
