Looking at their CD my first thoughts were, “That's not a logo, that's tattoo art or T-shirt art (worn mostly by the I-wanna-be-a-rock-star-too sort of people)! Prior to getting this album in physical form, I had heard some of their mp3s and their futuristic slickness and stylish technical approach had admittedly roused my interest in them then. Too bad I didn't know that it was all Diftery had to offer.

Yep, these new Slovak brutal deathmetallers squeal their guts out through their ass and toil incessantly at creating technical music but all that proves to be pretty much insignificant in the end because it is never engaging and you don't remember any of it later. It is almost like having suffered a sudden memory loss right after listening to Corrupting the Evolution. To continue writing this review I honestly had to listen to the album again to remind me what it was all about. This is because their music doesn't have a backbone in the form of substantial death metal riffage. Without it, it just lies on the ground squirming and coiling helplessly like a worm that will never really goes places.

Their primarily Disgorge(US) influenced music has potent Cryptopsy build-ups and breakdowns and some stubborn Devourment chugs too, but between all that there is aimless and nonsensical technical music bearing similarities to Decrepit Birth (on their first album) and Origin. The guys in Diftery are technically proficient, perhaps precociously so too, I'll give them that, but it isn't worth shit if they can't write a single decent or memorable riff. Oh wait, I beg your pardon, there is in fact one death metal riff which is somewhat meaningful; yes, in “Evisceration of the Enemy” there is a riff which wouldn't be out of place on a Gorgasm album. Similarly, there is just one instance of lead break, a beautiful one actually, in “Rectal Menses”. That is all I can remember after giving Corrupting the Evolution a handful of spins.

Let's face it: there are people who would dig Diftery's ultra-slick and fairly technical (but not overly so) style of brutal death music. As long as the music entertains them for the time being with whatever it has got, these people don't care. And while I seem to be ruthlessly bashing this album, it is not entirely weak and insufferable. Lucid and balanced, the production is nigh impeccable and it is fun to listen to brutal death music sounding so good. Also, Diftery are adept at providing relief parts and if backed up by some quality riffs, it is sure to win them some love. But as it stands, Corrupting the Evolution is a forgettable album. Come on guys, I know you can do better than this.
