Generic - a: relating to or characteristic of a whole group or class: GENERAL b: having no particularly distinctive quality or application. That is the definition I got for the word generic out of my handy Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary. If you want a picture accompanied by sound for what generic is like in tangible form get yourself the new Fleshgrinder disc ‘Coroner's Inquest Suit'. You are sure to be disappointed, but then you're smart enough to be reading this review so I doubt you'll be pissing away dead presidents on this rubbish. Fleshgrinder are from Brazil, a country known for having some of the most beautiful people on the planet. Yet, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is also recognized for being the ‘Plastic Surgery Capital of the World,' therefore, it is blasé information that a band like Fleshgrinder is basically a Carcass rip off with elements of Machetazo and Tu Carne shoved in for a forlorn attempt at throwing the listener off from the obvious.
Prior to listening to ‘Coroner's Inquisition Suit', I knew what to expect having been familiar with their previous albums. My hope was that for their fifth release (Including a split with Lymphatic Phlegm) they had finally created a true identity that would possibly push them towards the forefront of the Goregrind genre. This was meretricious thinking and I was let down the moment the wanna-be-scary kiddy intro that is meant to enhance the phony gore covers ambiance was over. From the opening riffs of the first song one recognizes this as total Carcass, the drums are Carcass, the bass is Carcass, the guitar is Carcass, and it sounds like they got a Brazilian Jeff Walker to do the vocals. The music as a whole is bombastic, consisting of banal down tuned instruments played in kindergarten progressions, drums that lack consistent speeds or syncopation, and lousy scraggly vocals. Really the only positive is the pitch shifted vocal effect that sounds like chunky raw sewage running down a cliff wall, but even that gets old after about 30 seconds. Other lowlights of this recording are the squealing Death Metal guitar solos, that where originally patented by Kerry King, on tracks 7, 9, and 11. The half assed vibrato stroking is more horrible than watching an uncircumcised porn star bust a load in Oprah's face. The only descent songs are “Cadaveric Saponification” that has a Metallica style riff, a Kerry King guitar lick, and the sick vibe of Tu Carne, “Ruptured Carcinoma of Ascending Colon” cause it is 19 seconds long, “Use An Enteratoma In A Blue Vulva” with 59 seconds of duration, and my personal favorite “Act 3 - Antropophagus” coming in at 9 seconds. As a whole this album is 39:40 worth of hebetating generic Goregrind. It is egregious enough that I would sooner blast Culture Club songs from my car stereo with the windows rolled down while wearing full make-up than play this in the privacy of my home. Hell, it is so fucking bad that if I were a Metalhead/prisoner at Guantanamo Bay I'd simply crack and tearfully spill all the information I know rather than hear another note blaring at full volume.
Probably what makes this effort by Fleshgrinder worse is that they have remained stagnant in their progression as musicians for their 4th full length recording. In contrasting ‘Coroner's Inquest Suit' with ‘S.P.L.A.T.T.E.R' and ‘Libido Corporis' one can discern that the production of the 2 previous recordings is at least as good. The difference involving past Fleshgrinder albums and their new release is a nastiness that was present in all the songs between the instruments giving it all depth. For example, the guitar could be differentiated from the bass, and drums that were shoddy could be overlooked by saying the music had a bit of technicality. Yet, what has happened with ‘Coroner's Inquest Suit' is a noticeable lack of aggressiveness rendering the album mundane. Thrashy parts are missing and when present they seem contrived and forced. All the instrument play seems sloppy, and the vocals are raspy but anachronistic. In the past comparisons to Carcass where a compliment, but now they are insult in that Fleshgrinder seem to have taken all their past albums, put them into some distorted malleable form, ingested the music, and shit it out in one steaming mass of extraneous Goregrind, which they rubbed all over their faces.
Hack- 1: Working for hire with mediocre professional standards. Yup, that is the definition that Merriam Webster has provided me with for Fleshgrinder as musicians. Now it may seem that I'm to the point of insulting them as a reviewer, but that is not COMPLETELY the case since I did not discuss their pathetic gore album cover or pseudo typical artwork featuring a saw, maggots and the band members covered in blood. Also, I did not devote a paragraph to their cover of the Pungent Stench' song “Blood, Pus And Gastric Juice”, which is so awful I'd rather have a cracked out Mike Tyson bite my left ball off than endure it for 4:15 of my precious life. Bottom line: I'm more nonplussed at this album than Paris Hilton at a soup kitchen. Exacerbating my mental trauma is how the guys in Fleshgrinder have mortified themselves into believing that what they have done on this album is worth any type of praise. These guys had better start making their day job a career cause all they have done with ‘Coroner's Inquest Suit' is prove their mediocrity while stirring the pussy juices of teen girls whose fixation with their music is a fancy that will last till they discover Slipknot.
