Goregast - La Revancha
A German band with some Spanish song titles and an animal liberation theme, Goregast are an interesting band to say the least. Fortunately, the same can be said about their music, which is a seamless fusion of Death Metal and Grindcore quite different from the ones you have heard. Participating in this dual-genre relay race, Goregast are like conjoined twins, with each of the bodies representing either of the two genres. Now which of them dominates the overall sound is relative, as it depends on which side you are watching Goregast from. For this unbiased reviewer from his vantage point, both genres run hand in hand, sometimes the death metal side is leading, sometimes its the grind side, but due to their exceptional deformity, Goregast win the race together and this fact should drive both sections of the audience in a wild frenzy. After an intro that aims to remind the band and the listener of the tortured animals, this revengeful album comes to life with “Animalismo”, an exhilarating, heart-racing track inspired by Obscenity's Human Barbeque album. Ferocious growls and sizzling screams terrify you while the music grabs you and clobbers and thrashes you in a rhythmic manner, even stopping to play a doleful lead in between just like Obscenity. With a bouncy grind momentum, “Solo Asesinos” has a combination of grindcore and death metal riffs that are loosely influenced by early Terrorizer and Vader respectively. “Varg Sucks Varg” and “Aspirador” are well-composed tracks which cover all the possible areas - from having ridiculously catchy opening tunes reminiscent of early Napalm Death, to playing Carcass' splattery and chugmatic sequences, to the solemn execution of Vomitory riffs. If “Suck My Ass, Yeah!” is a short cathartic song featuring crusty tunes of Extreme Noise Terror and Disgust (UK), “Pelt Coat Fuck Off” has some superb Vomitory circa Revelation Nausea and latter-day Asphyx/ Soulburn riffs which are cleverly punctuated by grind battering and spunk. After dabbling in pure death metal, the next couple of songs feature noticeable gory influences in the more vitriolic and bubbly guise of Haemorrhage, but never are they tedious for they are always juxtaposed with the easy, sprawling mid-paced parts or something as cool. "Gusano Sangroso" has appeasing Vomitory tunes mingling with rabid Carcass sickness to produce interesting results, while donning the fuzzy overcoat of grindcore of course. As you can see, Death Metal and Grindcore are inseparable elements of this band. Attempt to extricate one of them, and like extra clingy Siamese twins, Goregast will die instantly. Together they not only make the band stand out, they complement each other. And unlike most Death/Grind bands that are influenced by the beefy Harmony Corruption era Napalm Death, Goregast's Death/Grind music sounds entirely different. They have a highly streamlined, crunchy and thrashy sound, and backed by superior song writing, high quality riffs and their type of live show intensity, the music they collectively churn out is stimulating. La Revancha is unoriginal and inconsistent; nevertheless, it is a refreshing album, decent enough for you to spend your money on.
