Dear oh dear! What in the name of twattin' crikey is this?!

It is of course the long-awaited return of Gut! Seeing as it's been a good eleven years since their last full length album, this should've been one of the most exciting Grind events of the season. It's a cryin' shame then, that the album is actually a complete cringefest of cack! Before acquiring this, I was aware the band had made distinct changes to their sound by incorporating alien styles and unfamiliar concepts into it, but had no idea it could ever end up being such a paralysing disappointment! Don't get me wrong, an overt sense of humour often works wonders for Grindcore, especially Pornogrind, where prominent black comedy goes hand in hand with the bubbly groove, but The Cumback 2006 is definitely the sound of Gut unabashedly taking the piss out of us all! If any loyal Gut fans found the experimental aspirations of side project Libido Airbag and Nunwhore Commando 666 a little hard to stomach, then I can only imagine this will have them gagging and regorging uncontrollably. Now, I for one have always adored the Airbag and other such Cybergrind bands, cos I find dirty Techno and boisterous Gabba can complement the bawdy nature of Porngrind wonderfully. However, the combination of styles used on The Cumback 2006 falls flat on its flabby, unclean arse, with limbs flailin' wildly, mouth dribblin' inanely in a futile attempt to keep the attention of this reviewer.

If you've decided to read this far thru my juvenile rant, then you may be wondering what makes this such a poor album. Well, a once healthy 'n' thrustin' Gut is stricken with a number of debilitating illnesses, the most serious being their highly embarrassing Hip Hop affliction, a condition further exacerbated by a sickening Nu Metal sarcoma, not to mention a rather livid cluster of Electronic haemorrhoids. Although a few layers of old skool Gut-skin have survived infection, they're little more than insignificant, shrivelled up tatters that flap about forlornly, clinging threadlike to its once bright 'n' healthy, now sallow 'n' skeletal frame. It's not that I have any massive aversion to any of the genres given above. Far from it. In fact, if you ponder past the Brootal shelves of my collection, you're sure to find a whole host of such vintage Mallcore as Coal Chamber, Deftones, System of a Down and Fear Factory, lots of electronic music on labels like Warp and Ninja Tune, along with just a smattering of discs by Snoop Dogg, Cypress Hill and Fugees.  But with these three buffoons at the helm, their artistic expressions rarely ascend above abysmal.

I must confess that I found the disc vaguely amusing, almost quaint to begin with. At first, the decadent, hooksome beatz (sic) of the opening track cajoled me into a false sense of enjoyment as I waited excitedly for lots o' sadistic bondage grooves, spine-tinglin' d-beats and hilarious vokills. Unfortunately, the intro traipses on for about five minutes, featuring some extremely ill-advised attempts at rap, with which the band deliver some utterly winceworthy freestylin', harping on an on about themselves. When the German white-boy rap finally gives way to the genuine Gut sound, the resulting songs sound like lax duplications of old favourites, sadly lacking their character, charm and conviction. Such brazen replications of Odour of Torture have the potential to be just about adequate, but they're delivered with such laziness that they can't possibly make up for the mindless twaddle that makes up the rest of the CD. As the disc shambles onwards, we're subject to some riffs lifted straight from the Korn klassik, Follow the Leader, accompanied by some Hatebreed tainted, tuff guy bellows. When the Rap twattery resurfaces, it does so with the addition of some mediocre, sub-Gwen R&B vocalisations by one of the Gut 'bitches'. Whilst she clearly aint no hollaback girl, she most certainly is a pile o' cack, girl.

By the time the album hissed to a close, Gut had achieved their listener piss-take purpose, leaving this reviewer in a cynical state o' discontent after tryin' to unravel the worthy bits of the twenty six tracks on offer, to no avail. Much head scratching ensues while I try to think of any appropriate time to play this release. Perhaps if you invited a handful o' friends around to your gaff for a Grindcore barbecue during the summer months, you might just throw this one for laughs. However, it wouldn't be long before you were all itchin' for some bona fide Pornogrind, searchin' fervidly thru the towerin' CD stack for Odour of Torture, or better still, Sicko Baby and More Babes by Mucupurulent! If this is the Cumback of Gut, then I simply can't wait for them to go away again.
