US MySpace band Liquid Skull play a rudimentary form of old school death metal, with the songs on its Abscessive Autopsy demo sounding nearly as bad the quality of the streaming songs on that place. Musically though, they are way better than most of their abysmal lo-fi MySpace peers. Abscessive Autopsy boasts of a tasteful combination of the old Swedish and American death metal styles, of Entombed/Dismember and Death/Autopsy, which is spiced up with a sprinkling of grinding nastiness of Repulsion.

Like most of their songs, “Protoplasmic Perfection” begins in Swedish style by playing Entombed riffs which the band hopes sound just as imposing (they don't) but serve their purpose pretty well anyway. They are soon accompanied by skin-peeling vocals that resemble Schuldiner's on Leprosy, and with this added causticity, it changes the way you look at this band. Later on in the same song, Liquid Skull weave out a beautiful melodic tune of a Swedish nature that can be likened to say God Macabre which manages to please this reviewer enough for him to utter “ah!” just before it ends. Playing Dismember-esque riffs in a tone that should rightfully be ball-shearing but ends up giving it only a tingling sensation, “Artery Corruption” is where the band gracefully slows down to allow you to revel in its occasional dark and sludgy old school moments. This side of the band is further explored in “Spinalectomy”, a much more confident and reassuring song which employs a few drunken Autopsy notes to amplify the feel, after which the band breaks into an absolutely smashing breakdown that makes you go berserk in your room and indulge in kicking open your cupboard, tossing out your clothes, tearing them apart, and so on.

This is a decent old school affair from a band that has got its basics right. To make it an engaging one, however, Liquid Skull could learn a neat songwriting trick or two from fine bands such as Murder Squad and (early) Morgoth whom they occasionally remind you of. And if backed by a strong convincing production, there is little doubt that Liquid Skull will win themselves many fans and fat groupies well past their prime. Check them out and give them the support they deserve.
