Aaaaaaaaaargh!! Make it stop!!! Just when I thought this preposterously oversaturated style couldn't possibly get any worse, the stale ol' scene goes and retches up yet another Brutal Slammin' Death Metal band, brandishin' another album with no intention of bringin' to the Brootal table a single nice new idea with regard to songwriting, musicianship, performance style, atmosphere, texture or momentum, and without givin' thought to its repeat-spin value, listener enjoyment or overall worth. Now, seein' as we already have some less than complimentary reviews of terrible shite like Guttural Engorgement [review] and Abominable Putridity [review], as well as Carnivore Diprosopus [review], I don't want those and this, yet another Brutal slaggin' review, to end up makin' Diabolical Conquest zine appear to be some sort of Brootal Death bashin' gang, ‘cos I daresay several of us enjoy quite a few bands from within the genre, just as long as they don't dullify our senses beyond all retrieval. This came out late last year, and I recently stumbled across it whilst searchin' for some nice new Brutal stuff, and thought I'd best warn you about it. So, Malodorous are our rubbish Brutal Death act this week.

Apparently, they're a two man band, so perhaps the limited personnel may explain the considerable lack o' creativity , but on the other hand, other duos Death/Grind duos like Retch, Infant Bile or Noxious Coitus wouldn't succeed in peddlin' such trite tripe even if they were off of their mash on sulphuric, boot-polish laden soap-bar hash. Furthermore, even one man projects such as Insidious Decrepancy, Putrid Pile, heck even ol' Ancient Necropsy couldn't produce anything as unspeakably banal even in the depths of a week-long binge on smelly, diesel-saturated resin. A typical tune will open on some filmclip intro or other, afore pilin' into fast paced, blurry clatter, a gigantic throwaway slam or a big rubbish chug, swappin' back and forth between the two a few times throughout the song, afore they decide ‘Yeh, that'll do!', round it off then move onto the next, identical number. The drums pitter-patter away predictably, while the riffs chug, then jun, then whirr, then repeat, laced with frustratingly forseeable pinched harmonics, with unimaginative swirly-whirly tunnel-gob gutturals wrapped around the rhythms. Of course, this is the same mentality of many such slam-besotted bands and projects nowadays, but a smatterin' of them manage to pull the Brootal trappings tightly together via massive adrenal structure-injections, addictive vokill acrobatics, flashy flourishes and/or dazzlin' drummin'! Unfortunately, Malodorous have forgotten to write any songs, and instead they've just taken a heap o' worn-out stock slam, cheezoid drum-prog, uninspired ‘sick' gutturals and jejune jun-juns, then crudely glued ‘em together with Pritt Stick! Granted, they do build-up to the main slam-point, but the destination itself is so dreary it doesn't really make much difference. Heck! They lack the basic Brootal bounce that often succeeds in makin' stuff like this any fun.

There seems to be a sizeable Putrid Pile influence on this, with the songs workin' within the trademark LaCanne framework; writhing buzzsaw strummin' with that tuggin' sense of big-slam forebodin', afore leadin' you to that ecstatic plateau of chugulated crushment at exactly the right moment. But without the shrewd songwriting methods, airtight guitarwork, old-skool Death tinge and consummate vox o' the man LaCanne, every tune ends up on its arse in no time. Much like Guttural Engorgement, there appears to be a neatly coiffed, GHD straightened Deathcore vibe runnin' through their segmented breakdowns, bringin' to mind the kung-fu flail-friendly chug-block riffage Wakin' the Cadaver and maybe a muddified Ion Dissonance. The dull drumprog cloddery and nondescript riffage sounds like the blandest bits of Mortician dragged thru grayish quag, whilst the minimalistic, two-note slam-fests remind me of recent tripe like Vulvectomy, Soaking in Entrails, Lacerated Entrails and, one o' the guitarist's other bands, Splattered Entrails. Of course, I'd also refer to Devourment as an influence, but Malodorous actually make the Texan sickos sound like maestros of musical theory.

Production is horrible; the drums are flat and clicky, the guitars sound hazy and waspy and the voks are just a thin, watery substance; thus renderin' the thing unappetizing and clinical. The only redeemin' features here are the song titles/lyrics, which, nice ‘n' verbose, remind me a bit of ol' Suffo, and the artwork is ok too, ‘cos it's lovely ‘n' purple.

I can imagine myself havin' a good ol' bitch over the garden fence with a neighbour. “Eeeeeeee, I saw dear ol' Brutal Death Metal the other day, he's really let himself go! Eeee, he hasn't half aged! Eeee, fancy, only ten years ago he was the very picture o' radiance, all shiny slams, crunchy chugs and strikin' vox, these days he wouldn't know a decent riff it came up and bit him in the kick drum!” Niles from off of Frasier puts it better than I ever could; this release is “like running into a movie star you worshipped as a child. Only time has left her hair brittle, her eyes sunken and dull, her skin waxy and sallow.” Avoid.
