Maniac Killer - Amusing Anecdotes for the Depraved

Neil Smith - All vocals, guitars, bass, drums and drum programming

What do Bad Taste, Aliens, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre Series, Night Breed, Blood Sucking Freaks and a slew of others 70's/80's horror/Sci-Fi films have in common? Besides the fact that they are all cult classics-they all play just as important of a role as guitars and vocals in Maniac Killer's spastic, over the top cyber grinding tour de HOLYSHIT! That is 'Amusing Anecdotes for the Depraved'.

Obvious inspiration comes from acts like Repulsion, Catasexual Urge Motivation, and Mortician. There are other styles represented here as well from Misfits style punk to some old school crossover thrash bits, but all in under the tempo of “inhuman“. To me the end result sounds somewhat like a more hyperactive version of Disgorge of Holland. I find Maniac Killer to be MUCH more entertaining than almost any other “cyber grind” outfit I've heard though. This is a whole league better than acts such as Decomposing Serenity, as Maniac Killer seems to actually make an effort of writing cohesive and memorable songs, as opposed to just being a mindless tornado of forgetability (yes I just made up a word).

This specific version of the release is a welcome addition to my catalog of music since I previously only had a CDR version that Maniac Neil (the sole member of Maniac Killer, now butchering young attractive braless girls along side Lord Gore) had given me years ago with no track list… However I am saddened by the fact that a lot of the intros, outros and pieces to specific songs were altered or simply deleted. Track 22 ("The Evil Lord of Destruction 666") with it's black metal (!?!?!!!!) introduction had a “cock rock” outro completely omitted from this version-sad, as it was hilariously, perversely entertaining!!!!!

Back to the music, nearly every song has an intro, outro and samples from various movies ranging from the ultimately obscure (outtakes from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2) to the relatively popular (Aliens, Tremors) worming their way in and out as if they were solos or vocal lines themselves. Along side these splices of horror, slasher, Sci-Fi and splat-stic films is grinding, punishing relentless grind. Imagine if Mortician wasn't a self parody and could totally shred a fretboard without breaking a mental sweat (and yes there are a few “solos“ on here!). The vocals are full of more variety than almost any band out there today; toilet bowl regurgitations, septic tank gurgles, old school roars, Mortician moans, high pitched shrieks of anger and terror, brutal heaving throat bleeding death snarls. If nothing else, Maniac Killer easily has the vocal department cornered. The drums, are a drum machine (duh!) and sound like, a drum machine, I know you've been around long enough to know what they are like.

The production is a double edged sword, on headphones it's thick and the drum machine sounds like a constant barrage of jackhammers and machine guns. Unfortunately however on a smaller “boom box” or a car stereo it can tend to come across rather thin, especially the second half of the album…Speaking of the second half, there is no samples to be found and the music is more so similar to Mortician than the first 22 tracks. They also don't seem to hit with the same fury or passion as the earlier songs (which by the way, were recorded AFTER the second half of the release). While not as entertaining nor as original as the initial 22 tracks, a few songs still pack a pretty mean brain-punch.

Overall synopsis would be that goregrind and cyber grind fans NEED this album. There is no possible way it could even begin to disappoint. If you're more into traditional death metal, or like a little melody (ya' short haired fruit…) you already know you don't like “cyber grind” so don't bother.

Fun album!!!!!!! Peel that pig and slice him thick! Maniac Killer's my SWEET PEA!
