So many bands (Putrescence, Bitch Infection, etc etc) have used that same corpse on their artwork that by now it must enjoy some kind of a celebrity status. Good for her, but not for you and certainly not for the band - unless it happens to be a part of their marketing strategy to establish their b(r)and name. Ugh, anyway it didn't do enough to stop someone as carefree as me from treating it like a used condom and tossing it at the back of my CD cupboard and burying that corpse under piles of better looking and assumedly better sounding cds.
But then, you see, I had to review it. So after much self-persuasion, my righteous self went and dumped the disinterred corpse into my CD player. And I'm so glad I did, because soon after I found myself running around like a dog that had just discovered a body replete with all the bones a human body can possibly have, perhaps even more if you count the broken ones. So this amazing resurrected bitch, Mockery, entices you over here by singing brutal death metal songs while taking a goresoaked spongebath in utter darkness. Songs from Disgorge's ‘She Lay Gutted', Deeds of Flesh's ‘Trading Pieces', Mortician's ‘Zombie Apocalypse' and even Incantation's deadly ‘Mortal Throne of Nazarene'. Yes, you'd want to break the door down and start pounding that bitch right away while splashing water all around.
Their version of the songs contain a lot of chugginess but it's not done in a senseless way, it's done with pride and it's done efficiently, you can think of them as a large steam locomotive and an unstoppable one at that. They crush anyone who comes in their track and spare absolutely no one – not the people squatting on the tracks, not even the cows. In fact in “Fermenting Surprise=Decrepit Alive”, you can even hear people screaming “aaahhhh!!!!” while they're getting run over. Good! They totally deserve it. The sounds Mockery create are extremely enjoyable too. They do an apt mimicry of prominent vocalists like Matti Way, Craig Pillard, Will Rahmer and others. Over that you have some genuine zombie groans and moans. Now if this is not cool I don't know what is.
The production is so warm and mushy that you'd want to wear it like a sweater. It's also so dark that there are chances of it being camouflaged in your skin colour if you happen to come from where I come from. And the intros, they're so damn sweet, feels like the doctor rubbing soft moist cotton on your ass before stabbing you repeatedly with a huge injection. Speaking of stabbing, check out this song name - “The More Guest Come, The More Stabs I'll Give…” - that's so fucking BRILLIANT!!!!! That's the innermost desire of each and every Indian here, especially during the festive season when the uninvited yet highly obligated bastards come in like a tsunami and wipe away all the existing food from your house. Man, I love this band.
But my love isn't deaf. They do have a few negative qualities in them like say the lack of quality individual riffs which also results in the songs sounding monotonous, but the overall sound, the overall package makes up for it and makes it sexy. The album is also a tad longer than it should've been but then again their music is so damn addictive that you'd be more than willing to compromise and listen to it in parts if that's the case.
‘…On The Slab' is a very (un)pleasant surprise and I'm afraid thinking about the extents I'd be willing to go to hear more from this adorable band. Now don't let that uncanny corpse mock you, just grab it and bite into it, it will taste great I'm sure.
