Obscene Extreme 2006 DVD
I've already reviewed this fest itself [review], so I'll keep this DVD review a bit
shorter and try not to plagiarize myself to much. For any readers who may
still be unfamiliar with this event, it's a three day Czech cavalcade, held
every Summer in at Na Bojisti in Trutnov, where scores o' Grind listeners
swarm about the place, enjoyin' the atmos and achievin' extreme merriment,
whilst baskin' in thousands upon thousands of blasts 'n' riffs. So watch
this, then go visit host Curby and his horde o' musician-friends this June.
High picture quality and satisfyin' camera angles with a clear sound
throughout, the main feature begins with Slovakian outfit Attack of Rage,
who open the show with a crushin' set o' brawny Death/Grind, followed by a
sequence o' scalpel-sharp songs from Eternal Bleeding, who make a convincin'
attempt to get heads spinnin' with some intricate Brutal Death. I missed the
next few bands when I attended OEF '06, due to extended gastric-engorgement
at the pleasant restaurant near the gate, so I was glad to see what I missed
out on. Pummellin', blast-heavy Brutal Death Metal from Italian act Wargore occurs, followed by first highlight of the disc thusfar, Jig-Ai, who put in
an impassably solid set o' thoroughly pulverizing bulldozer bondage Grind,
replete with chrome-plated grooves, dizzyin' speed and ludicrous vokills,
then French crazies DHIBAC continue the fun with their eccentric grindings.
Nailed is an unstoppable onslaught o' old skool flavoured, technical WYDM
(West Yorkshire Death Metal), full o' flashy twists and turns,
groove-infused churn and venomous guttural gurns. Negligent Collateral
Collapse are next, with a bulky set o' pulverisin' conceptual Death/Grind;
sticky, viscous riffage and clangulated percussion, with each lecture orated
via porcine vs. amphibian vox! Ultra-clinical yet indubitably groovy!
We're halfway through the day, so it's time for some afternoon cream-tea
ensmashment courtesy of Splitter, who deliver a face-excoriatin' set o'
enormously raucous Swedish Grindcore! Extremely fast riffin', piled-up
blasts and bright-red vokill fury equals a highly satisfyin' set! NYDM
darlings Wasteform are next, with a hefty set o' slampit instigatin' Brutal
Death/Grind, slappin' us about the place with very chunky riffin', powerful
rhythmic bashment and a frontman who commands the stage with totally
enraged, gentle-giant aplomb! Time for more Brutal Death capers with Internal Sufferin' who pop up next with their claustrophobic approach to the
genre; tightly-packed blasts underpin, nay, smother the whirring network o'
barbed-wire guitarwork, with lots 'n' lots o' guttural gusto lobbed on top!
Dusk swallows up the sun, out come Sinister with a large bag o' old skool
Death Metal goodies! Pulsin' rhythms, scything guitars and red-raw roars.
Rather repetitive, but a consummate performance all the same. Gullio and co
follow with a corrosive Cripple Bastards set! I remember shoppin', slurrin'
and slaverin' for Grind merch towards the end of their set, so it was nice
to try and fill in the gaps. The band are on fine form, and put in a raucous
set that features plenty o' favourites. It's a Polish Goregrind
double-feature next, beginnin' with veterans Dead Infection, who play a
rousin', if slightly muddified set, surgically disembowelin' everyone's
heads 'n' ears. Squash Bowels are the second part, which is tightly
performed selection o' Gore with limb-galvanizin' riffulence and breathless
percussion, but the vox are a bit scruffy; sounds like he's been straining
himself too much and desperately needs EQ and a drink. Local lads Mincing
Fury and Guttural Clamour of Queer Decay are next, providin' the high-point
o' the evenin' with their hysterical set filled with erratic yet catchy
songs; riffs that grind 'n' weave through peculiar progressions, nailed in
place by boisterous drumwork and daubed with multicoloured vokill
peculiarity. First rate Czechgrind entertainment!
It's 10am, everyone's in an advanced state of veisalgia, either face down in
the mud whilst covered in plastic cups or fallin' asleep into their
breakfast, so it's a good job Spasm are here to take their minds off of the
effects of extreme crapulence. Said jesters entertain the early risers with
some stupid Grind, which grabs everyone's attention and gets the day off to
a chuckle-filled start. Bufo follow, with rowdy, gig-friendly grindings for
breakfast, then Brutal Death brunch from technical Italian gang Septycal
Gorge, and a silly French Grind lunch served by Sylvester Staline. Vintage
ol' skool Death/Grind from Acroholia follows, along with a noddable yet
ploddin' set from Putrefied, then a bit later, Toxic Bonkers inject us with
an enormous dose of groovy brootality. After that, there's a vigorous bout o'
volatile Grindcore bashery from Mumakil; a band who stir all yer favourite
Grind ingredients into one red-hot pot, followed by a quality set of
Czechgrind from Alienation Mental.
After that, you can take yer pick from either vicious raucosity from
FromTheAshes, crustulated capers with Pisschrist, some grindin', Power
Violent high-jinx with F.U.B.A.R. or similar, slightly faster stuff from
Massgrav, then further Crust antics with Driller Killer. Many viewers
(includin' this reviewers) may be of the opinion that five consecutive
performances of dirty Grind styled bands is a little too much to digest in
one sittin', so the appearance of Pornogrind pioneers Gut initially comes as
something of a relief! However, their set is an embarrassment and shouldn't
ever have taken place. Right after that, Dismember provide a sizeable servin'
of old skool Swedish Death Metal in the shape o' a set that has an airtight
performance, huge song-flow, relentless rhythmic rumble and obvious DM
veteran expertise throughout. Bathtub Shitter are the highlight of the
evening, deliverin' some ridiculous Japanese Grindcore whose hulkin' grooves
'n' splashy-blasts flow in equal measures, whilst the vox give us the best o'
both worlds; frazzled, guttural roars interspersed with lots o' hilarious
bitch-squeals! Defeated Sanity are enjoyable too, but the live-sound job is
a washout!
If you're into extreme underground music and have yet to attend one of Curby's
grind gatherings, then you could do far worse than watch this and get a feel
for the place. A quality production.
